BASF 321 - Advanced Map Making 2 credits
Prerequisites Admission to the BAS-FRM program or instructor permission.
Geographic information systems provide a broad range of tools and techniques useful to natural resource managers. This course will focus on the application of various GIS programs used in natural resource management, and will build on skill learned previously in other GIS courses. Students will refine their mapping skills through a series of advanced GIS mapping projects that utilize existing datasets, as well as newly created data from in class exercises. Students will learn methods of spatial analysis which integrate remote sensing technologies, such as LIDAR into GIS databases. Activities in this course will also emphasize the use of handheld GPS devices to record new data, and verify existing data, in the field. BAS-FRM Degree required course.

Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Utilize a variety of GIS platforms to meet the needs of natural resource management.
- Create, download, and share complex GIS datasets for use in the office and in the field.
- Produce high quality maps suitable for both field work and inclusion in the management plans and/or contracts.
- Analyze spatial information using GIS and remote sensing technologies.
