BASF 421 - Advanced Harvest Systems 5 credits
Prerequisites Admission to the BAS-FRM program or instructor permission.
This class will focus on more in-depth understanding of harvest systems for the applied forester or land manager. The first part of the course will focus on cable and aerial based harvest systems. Topics will include: yarder types and specifications, skyline configurations, basic rigging requirements, payload analysis, and helicopter logging. The second part of the course will focus on conventional and mechanized operations for ground-based harvest systems. Topics will include: equipment types and specifications, mitigating soil disturbance, and temporary stream crossings. Specialized topics in both parts of the course will include: recognition of sensitive sites, unstable slopes, laws & policies related to harvesting in and around riparian or wetland zones, and cutting-edge technologies and methods. Labs will consist of timber sale preparation techniques, software utilization for harvest system analysis and onsite visits to active timber sales.

Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify appropriate harvesting systems to meet site specific environmental and business objectives.
- Design forest harvesting units to meet complex site specific and legal requirements.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of safety procedures and identify unsafe logging practices.
- Prepare paperwork required to conduct harvesting operations on complex forest landscapes.
- Perform the role of a contract administrator on forest harvesting operations.
