HIST 270 - African-American History


5 credits

Prerequisites
Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 095  or placement in ENGL& 101 , or instructor permission.

This course offers an overview of African-American history, from the earliest communities of free and enslaved African peoples in what is now the United States through the politics, culture, and society of the 20th century. It will include topics such the experience of slavery, the history and importance of both enslaved and free black communities in pre-Civil War America, Reconstruction, the Great Migration, and the long civil-rights movement. The class will also examine the ways in which African and African-American cultures have directly contributed to the development of popular culture and American identity throughout American history.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to gather, contextualize, and present multiple views of historical data.
  • Demonstrate ability in using basic historical methods such as the understanding of primary sources and the appropriate use of other scholars’ work.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of history as a tool toward active citizenship and successful participation in a diverse society.
