BASF 461 - Wildlife Habitat Management


5 credits

Prerequisites
ENGL& 101  or instructor permission. Admission to the BAS-FRM program.

Forest managers are not wildlife biologists but they do manipulate the habitat that wildlife live in.  This course will combine discussion of various attributes of a forested ecosystem and methods to assess these characteristics.  These include such concepts as methods to monitor for wildlife presence, small animal enhancement techniques, even-aged and uneven-aged structural characteristics, wildlife corridors and riparian area assessment.  The students will complete a modified Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) for a listed species that could inhabit portions of western Washington.

Course Outcomes
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic wildlife ecology principles including population dynamics
  • Apply skill and knowledge to collect wildlife habitat and ecology data needed for habitat assessment and management
  • Access, read, and understand scientific and government documents related to wildlife ecology topics
  • Conduct and write up a wildlife related research project
