BASF 451 - Multiple Resource Management


5 credits

Prerequisites
Admission to the BAS-FRM program or instructor permission.

This course exposes students to other important fields of natural resource management that professional foresters often interact with. The first part of the course focuses on the management of fire resources and how modern science has changed our understanding of fire in the ecosystem. Topics will center around how foresters manage fire resilient forests, large incident management, suppression methods, biological & ecological impacts, and modern fire science & research. The second part of the course focuses on managing forest land for multi-use recreation. Topics will center around facility types and access: dispersed hiking & camping vs. managed campgrounds, and motorized vehicles vs. human powered recreation. The concept of multi-use recreation will be emphasized as well as the contrast between recreation management of private lands vs. state and federal lands. The third part of this course will focus on urban forest management topics. Understanding the unique environmental conditions of trees in the urban landscape, and arboriculture techniques commonly applied to urban trees.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of fire science & ecology in land management, and prescribe/conduct controlled burning techniques in the field.
  • Design & apply multi-resource management techniques to increase access and cooperation among diverse user groups.
  • Create management plans to promote beneficial forests: aesthetics, recreation, ecosystem services, wildlife habitat, co-production, wilderness, and wildland urban interface.
  • Utilize silvicultural & arboricultural concepts/techniques to manage urban forests.
