ELA 089 - English Language Acquisition - Writing VI


Variable 4-5 credits

Prerequisites
Appropriate CASAS assessment score, a passing grade in ELA 085 , or instructor permission.

This course is a continuation of intermediate writing skill development started in ELA 085. It will work to further develop writing skills with contextualized content designed for English Language Learners. The class will emphasize writing skills needed to communicate more effectively in the worlds of work, college and everyday life. Knowledge of how to appropriately communicate math concepts, in writing, will also be included.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Use appropriate basic reading, speaking & listening strategies.
    1. Use critical thinking skills to interpret a variety of basic texts
    2. Apply basic reading strategies to math texts and word problems
  2. Build basic everyday vocabulary
    1. Improve literacy, speaking & listening
  3. Show comprehension of basic types of texts
    1. Demonstrated knowledge of how to use technology to enhance reading
    2. Be able to determine what a variety of texts state explicitly
