ART 250 - History of Art: Japan

Prerequisites
Completion of ENGL& 101 

Explores the arts of Japan, ancient to contemporary. Examines art and architecture as the expression of religious, philosophical, and social traditions, historical events, and contemporary movements.

Theory Hours
5 theory hours.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Develop an understanding of the major art forms and styles of Japan, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and ceramics.
• Analyze and interpret the art and architecture of Japan, demonstrating an understanding of formal qualities and underlying cultural meanings.
• Compare and contrast the art and architecture of Japan with other traditions, within and beyond Asia, revealing similarities and differences.
• Evaluate the role of art and architecture in Japanese society, including its function in religious and secular contexts, as well as its relationship to power.
