ENGL 104 - English Composition Plus

Prerequisites
Placement in READ 090   or above; placement in MATH 070  or above; placement into co-requisite ENGL& 101  , eliglible for ENGL& 101 , or Instructor Permission

Corequisites
ENGL& 101  

Co-requisite course that directly supports the goals of ENGL& 101   by addressing reading and writing processes, rhetorical situations, grammar & usage, and information competency. The course supports students in developing self-efficacy and metacognitive skills while introducing students to effective use of academic support services. All students taking this course must also be enrolled in the linked section of ENGL& 101  .

Appropriate for students who have placed into English Composition Plus or who have placed into ENGL& 101  but are unsure of their skills or readiness for college-level English. May not be taken as a stand-alone course.

Course Outcomes
Upon completing English 104, students will be able to:

  • Develop and use strategies to comprehend the content and context of college-level reading materials and to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of those materials for a given setting or audience (rhetorical situation)
  • Use rhetorical knowledge (audience awareness, purpose, etc.) to make conscious choices when analyzing, organizing, and composing texts
  • Identify information needs and locate, analyze, critically evaluate, integrate, and appropriately attribute information sources
  • Engage and reflect upon a composing process that includes prewriting, drafting, participating in a feedback process, revising, and editing
